ON THE COURSE
Current climate conditions in Port Elizabeth have made life as a course superintendent so much more challenging. Course staff are not only fighting the elements but also load shedding, to keep the greens and fairways alive. Here is some insight into what Stephen and his team must contend with over the hot summer months.
The Humewood greens are a variety of A1A4 bent grass and POA (winter grass). Bent grass doesn’t need much water and is fed by our fertilizer program, growing from strength to strength in the summer months with some hand watering. POA (Winter grass) is a cool weather grass that can produce perfect putting surfaces in cooler conditions but can struggle in hot, humid & windy conditions that have been experienced over the last few weeks. Throw in some load shedding and course staff are now scrambling to keep greens alive as no electricity means no pumps.
Stephen and his team have tirelessly worked on keeping the greens in a playable condition. The only noticeable evidence is the discolouration of the POA to yellow. Course staff monitor greens throughout the day, hand water when needed and have also instituted twice a month verti-cutting and dusting to prevent thatching and stress.
Unfortunately, our tenth green that is predominantly POA is most affected with Stephen having no choice but to sod areas of the green. With some extra treatment this green will be back to true playing conditions within 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, greens will be slightly slower than usual and but they will still roll true.
Some golfers have raised concerns, but I assure you the greens are healthy and with current cooler and rainy conditions, they will be back to expected standards. The reality is that Humewood’s greens will have to endure this for several years to come. The program we are developing will strengthen our Bent grass coverage and reduce that of the POA.
The course staff wish you all the best for 2020 and look forward to improving on what is a truly a spectacular Links.
